About

Trolley Works puts you inside six versions of the trolley problem, in a realistic 3D world: at a lever beside a branch line, on a footbridge, at an operating table and in a signal box. Read one short paragraph, then choose between two buttons while tags in the scene show who each option would harm. The scene plays out to the moment before anyone is harmed, then holds; what happens is told, never shown. Each ends with what research found and questions to discuss. With a class, count hands for each choice and see the split.

Learning outcomes

Players learn to explain the trolley problem and the variants philosophers use to test it, distinguish killing from letting die, compare harm used as a means with harm foreseen as a side effect, weigh the number of lives against rights and loyalty to people they love, judge whether a rule set in advance differs from a choice in the moment, justify a decision with reasons, state the strongest objection to their own view, and check their answers against studies of how others decided. Cases come from Foot, Thomson, Sharp and the Moral Machine experiment. Outcomes concern reasoning, never a position.
